Gardiren is the principal settlement of Nephshire on the northern frontier of Kaldor. It lies on the eastern bank of the fast-moving River Shem, twenty leagues north of Tashal. Vast forests claimed by the Taelda barbarians extend north and east to the Sorkin Mountains. These rich forests and centuries of trade with Azadmere have been sources of great wealth for Clan Curo, a wealthy and ancient clan led by the proud Earls of Neph.

Caer Gardiren's excellent river port and its control of Medrik Bridge, the only crossing of the Shem north of Heru, ensure control of northern traffic using Noron's Way. Gardiren is also the western terminus of the Silver Way, the rugged trail leading to the mysterious and fabulously wealthy Kingdom of Azadmere.

The Gardiren article has sections on history, politics, government, religion, law & order, economics & trade, and military forces. It includes full-page color GM and player maps, descriptions of more than 50 village locations, plans and descriptions for the castle, bios and stats for NPCs, and details about the annual Silver Fair and religious pilgrimages.

Although designed to be used with the HârnMaster rule system, Gardiren is generic enough for easy conversion for use with other rule systems and can easily fit into any medieval fantasy game setting.

Note: This article has been revised with color illustrations and now includes a 6-page expansion of the Jug Inn, previously sold separately. The expansion describes the establishment, its services, staff, and clientele. Full-color plans of the inn are included, along with several adventure hooks the GM can use to bring the location into play.

FIRST - be sure you do not purchase Gardiren #10 The Jug Inn, chances are good you read the note long before you read this review. It was frustrating to purchase both together only to discover that it was included in this module; no did not read the de [...]

As is typical for Hârn, here is a wonderfully-detailed area, with enough background to keep an historian happy and plenty going on to make it worth a visit from your characters. Starting with the history of the settlement from earliest times, its impo [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
