Caladon Falls (Savage Worlds)
by Dillard R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/15/2011 22:08:14

Bottom line this is a five star product.

I do not rate that high very often.

The art is superb. The setting material is enough to get you into the game immediately and Savage Mojo has tons of freebies on line. Caladon Falls supports the original campaign (Relic) in the Savage Suzerain rules. If you follow the campaign and the savage tales at the end of the book your characters will end up at Heroic for sure. This also means that you can use these characters at a later time to close out that original campaign in Savage Suzerain.

I wish they had paper minis for the beastiary, but that is a minor issue.

The critters are imaginative. The villains are well thought out and original.

Its a military campaign with your characters as irregular forces. Maybe not the first time this has been done, but one of the best that I have seen.

I love military fiction and this is good military fantasy...and quite compelling.

Well worth the price.

Gamescapes: Story Maps: Ruins of the First Age (PDF)
by Keith (. T. A. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 02/05/2011 17:29:50

This product includes two high quality maps of 12 tiles each meant for printing and use in face-to-face games. The map depicts ruins and surrounding area with 8x8 inch tiles. If you plan to use it for a Virtual Table Top there's some work ahead of you. The maps are 8x8 inches bounded by white borders that overlap a bit. You'll need to crop the white border before using. (for instructions see http://bit.ly/e2usYV).

Gamescapes: Fantasy Battleground (PDF)
by Christopher H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/17/2011 16:53:35

When fully assembled, the "Fantasy Battleground" gamescape measures 24" x 32" and depicts a winding road where a battle of some sort has taken place. The flames and smoke suggest a very recent battle, and the two catapults in the upper right-hand corner suggest a siege, as does the large object in the top left, which appears to be a battering ram. However, there is no sign of a city wall, only some fragments of what might be a busted palisade. It makes you wonder (and not really in a good way) what that battering ram is doing there, so far away from the city gate. The style used by designer Alida Sazon seems somewhat impressionistic to me, producing a noticeably more "artsy" and less "realistic" style than I tend to prefer in products of this type. That's just personal preference, of course, and the gamescape does a pretty good job of delivering what it offers. As a general comment about this series, I do wish Savage Mojo would include an "overview" page showing a miniature version of the assembled map.

Gamescapes: Fantasy Battleground (PDF)
by Joe K. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/15/2011 14:01:08

Fantasy Battleground is a 14 page PDF. The first page is a cover splash page, as is the last page. The majority of the product is made up of images, eight squares by eight squres, with information on where the image takes place in the overall illustration on the bottom. The illustratons are color heavy, so go draft or laser print or be prepared to pay.

There are no bookmarks and no instructions outside of what is printed on the image page. One thing that would be handy to have here, is like 0one and some other maps publishers do, is to make an overall image so that the reader can see what the total effect will be like when assembling.

The battleground includes flags, wagons, weapons, grasslands, small fires, barrels and other bits that you might see from a finished batle. The art is solid, having a soft look but due to the nature of the illustrations being 2-D images, miniatues may look slightly off in comparission. For example, some of the barrels would be absolutely huge compared to standard 28mm figures. The flags go three or four squres. With miniatures the flags would take up one square. It's like a 3/4 view which doesn't necessarily work with flat maps.

One potential problem for some is that the images are very specific in how they play out. While someone with more imagination and time could find it useful, the way the images line up means that the images are going to form one larger picture and aren't meant to be used like some dungeon tiles might be where there is potential of shuffling the tiles around.

The product's relatively low cost, the quality of the art, and it's size, 3 top, 3 second, 3 middle, and 3 bottom, insures that if you're playing a game that requires some large scale size, like 4e, that you should be covered. There are several pieces that could be counted as difficult terrain, there are small woods to take cover in, and there are wagons to use for a quick retreat. The variety allows for some deeper strategies if your players enjoy that aspect of the game.

Fantasy Battleground will be a solid product for those looking for another outdoor encounter where the action just finished.

Noir Knights Player’s Guide (Savage Worlds)
by Samuel K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/12/2011 22:49:45

This is a fine addition to Savage Worlds and the Suzerain product line. Despite the initial look of it, it's not just another SW pulp setting - think "The X-Files" set in the Great Depression, and with high powered PCs who can be just as paranormal as the cases they investigate.

Gamescapes: Story Maps: Balloon Airship
by Christopher H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/06/2011 23:01:53

This well-conceived map set delivers exactly what it promises. The maps are high-quality, though the styles of, say, the wood flooring and the crates and barrels don't seem to be quite the same. I would definitely use these maps if running a game where this type of airship fit the setting.

Noir Knights (Savage Worlds)
by Thomas B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 12/28/2010 04:07:37

The Good:

  • A rip-roaring Depression era pulp setting that manages to avoid re-treading well-beaten paths.
  • Some great new Edges and Hindrances.
  • Very interesting, supernatural twists on existing historical events.
  • A setting section filled with plot seeds above and beyond the Plot Point Campaign.

The Bad:

  • Unfortunately, it doesn't feel very "noir".
  • The cover art falls shy compared other Savage Mojo releases.

Savage Suzerain (Savage Worlds)
by Thomas B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 12/21/2010 15:05:36

The Good:

  • Proof that there is "Life After Legendary"
  • A TON of character options including some great Edges.
  • Just a gorgeous book.
  • The best Savage Worlds Hindrance ever.

The Bad:

  • Some may be put off by some changes in common terminology.
  • Out of the "comfort zone" of PDF pricing, though the print is MORE than reasonable.

Caladon Falls: The Travelogue of Tavish Thorne
by Pasi V. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/12/2010 13:35:24

One of the most beautiful books I've seen here. Jason Engle's art is amazing, I spent a long time just flicking through the pages admiring the illustrations.

The story itself is nice, giving better access to the character Tavish Thorne than the world he is describing. That's not a bad thing at all, but for me this book was a nice, beautifully illustrated short story, not something that would spark my interest in the Suzerain campaign world.

The best free product I've downloaded here and definitely recommended.

Shanghai Vampocalypse (Savage Worlds)
by Thomas B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/05/2010 01:25:06

The Good: An epic mix of cyberpunk and mysticism, with real consequences for the PCs if they fail. An minicampaign truly worthy of "godlike" play.

The Bad: The biggest downside is that you really need two other books to get the most out of this (Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition and the Savage Suzerain book).

Shanghai Vampocalypse Player’s Guide (Savage Worlds)
by Anthony C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/19/2010 18:40:31

An interesting initial foray into what the demigod level of Savage World playing has to offer. It will appeal to fans of Feng Shui as it has a similar mix of Hong Kong action, weird tech, and magical tomfoolery. Also . . . vampires hordes for your ancient wise one or uzi packing ninja to dive into.

Gamescapes: Story Maps: The Crypt Of Darkness
by Christopher H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/12/2010 12:48:21

This entry in the Gamescapes Story Maps line strikes me as a bit less creative than some of the others, although it is highly detailed and beautifully drawn. Like all Gamescapes Story Maps, the crypt was crafted as a whole. This map exhibits almost complete right-left and top-bottom symmetry, the top corners different from the bottom corners (or vice versa) only in the presence of staircases. If you wanted a smaller crypt, there are ways you could trim down the map; for example, if you print only the left, center, or right tiles, you could construct a long, skinny crypt complex. The excellent artwork in this map outstrips the layout, which suffers from repetition.

Gamescapes: Story Maps: Lair Of The Necromancer
by Christopher H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 05/23/2010 01:03:31

The dark, foreboding mood of these printable dungeon tiles is perfect for the titular necromancer's lair. This product features twelve 8"x8" tiles, but it's not clear to me how the tiles are supposed to fit together to form a 24"x32" battlemap. An overview map or positioning guides (like those found in the "Scaling the Great Dragon" and "Scaling the Undead Dragon" sets) would have been helpful.

Gamescapes Battlemat Terrain: Ice Realm (PDF)
by Christopher H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 05/22/2010 22:55:47

"Ice Realm" provides you with twelve 8"x8" tiles that you can print and assemble to form a 24"x32" surface of ice or snow. It's not fancy, but it's very useful if your adventure takes PCs to (ant)arctic climes. There's nothing genre-specific here, so you can use the layout in any game. It's a bit hard to get excited about an ice sheet, but Savage Mojo executes the setting well on this printable battlemap.
