Top Secret / New World Order

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The new espionage role-playing game from Merle M. Rasmussen, creator of the first espionage role-playing game.

The time: now. The place: everywhere.

Your mission: preserve peace and stability in a world rife with conflict, mistrust, duplicity, and shadowy organizations.

You are an agent of ICON: The International Covert Operatives Network. You have been recruited from your former life, trained in the ways of tradecraft, and sent into the field to handle the missions that other agencies cannot, or will not handle.

One player is the Administrator, describing and controlling the game world, while the other players take on the role of international spies, working behind the scenes where governments won’t go.

Tense negotiations, dangerous combat, thrilling car chases, tradecraft, surveillance, intrigue, and subterfuge are all at hand with the roll of the dice.

Top Secret: New World Order is a tabletop role-playing game recommended for 2–8 players.

Wait, why would you release a new version with NO BOOKMARKS? The older release had kinda messed up bookmarks, at least fix them? Large PDFs are nearly unusable for play without bookmarks.

Is it me or hitting an unaware defender and coup de grace mechanics makes it harder to hit an opponent?

Also, why reputation is a die, if the only mechanic that includes reputation doesn't require it as a die, but just a mean to step up Suave die?

I've played Top Secret / New World Order at a convention where the designer, Merle Rasmussen was actually the Administrator (GM).

Everybody at the table had a blast saving the day in Merle's version of downtown London.

For what it's worth, this publisher has unfulfilled obligations to previous subscribers of it's "Gygax magazine" from a few years ago.

Jayson Elliot just ran the game for us at a local gaming con, and we had a total blast. It was the game I laughed the most in all weekend. Game is designed for fast play, and it shows.

The reviews of TS/NWO here at DriveThru are AWFUL! Is there anyone here who has played this that can give some insight on it as a SYSTEM and NOT on its art or how it compares to the original TSR release? I want to try this but the reviews...I hesitate. Did ANYONE here enjoy PLAYING this game and think its worth getting?

Thanks.

I'm a massive espionage fan (I run Modus Operandi) and love Top Secret/S.I. but I didn't enjoy playing this I'm afraid. Your mileage may vary though.

If you are into Top Secret/S.I. system, I would recommend Red Markets (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/226794/Red-Markets-A-Game-of-Economic-Horror). Not exactly the espionage flavor though.

I've only played it one time, at an online convention. The GM said that he scaled the rules down a bit for convention play in a set time limit, but I did have a really good time.

I backed the kickstarter and have the book, though I've never had time to get into reading it. That convention (the summer of 2020) is my only experience with the game. I am kind of dismayed that not much seems to have been done with it (the company's website only has one adventure for it on their site, and a short free downloadable adventure). The expectation was that there were several adventures coming out after the game's release (Merle had a few in the pipeline, and even Douglas Niles was advertised as having one called "The Durand Line") along with several expansion books, but as far as I can tell nothing has been done with the property at all. :(

The revised rulebook (v1.1) content is welcome, but the bookmarks in this version are something of a mess. I hope a v1.2 version with better bookmarks is on the way.

Unfortunately, I missed out on the KickStarter. Are there print versions available anywhere? Or a PoD available here in the future?

Several local gaming stores have boxes sets already available for sale. I'd call around.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
