Buccaneer: Through Hell and High Water

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

Things differ from what you might remember in your history books. Sure, the seas over flow with iron men and wooden ships, but the Caribbean permeates a lurking darkness. The Golden Age of Piracy suffers a tarnish from a taint of a malevolent force lurking in the waters. What started out as a silent plea for help, turned into a deep cry for mercy.

This 300+ page book is a setting for the Savage Worlds system. It brings the Golden Age of Piracy to life. Contained within you can find some new rules for ship combat, swashbuckling chaos, ship customization,  new archetypes, over twenty new edges and hindrances and an exciting world of Buccaneers, Vodou and Monsters to run your campaign.

While written for the previous version of Savage Worlds, a conversion document for the book will be available soon!!

Hello. In case no one else has caught it yet, I just wanted to point out that on page 132 of the printed book, the "Standard Ship Damage Table" is printed twice, and the "Above Deck Damage Table" is missing. The tables/pages are correct, however, in the PDF.

Referring to the 'Ship Table' on page 110, what does the last column labeled 'Dam' refer to?

How does installing larger guns work? Is it -1 Prow for each (balanced) set of guns upgraded?

Hi Charles,

I'm having a problem with the ship damage system.

Any chance of providing a ship combat example to clarify exactly how it works as I'm finding p.129 under Damage a bit contradictory/confusing, specifically "We don’t use the rules for armor.....when assessing ship damage. Draw a card for each point of damage taken." and "Once fired add all of the damage inflicted on the enemy vessel."

Does Toughness come off the total damage rolled for all cannon hits, or each individually? And does "Draw a card for each point of damage taken" refer to every point of that damage inflicted, either in total or by individual cannon, or just one card per gun [2 cards if Heavy Cannon] causing a damaging hit?

I really would appreciate the clarification.

Hi Mark,

Here is a reply from one of the authors of the book.

Charles

Hi Mark,

The toughness is used the same as all Savage Worlds combats, in that the toughness equals the level to hit in order to sustain a wound (or in our case a card draw). Thus if a ship has 14 toughness and a single cannon rolls a 12, it is assumed the shot missed or bounced off the hull. If a cannon rolls an 18 on the other hand the ship would take two wounds (or again card draws for each)

So how our rules differ, is to add more drama to the process. Each wound would draw a card and determine its outcome, example if it is a standard shot and you take one wound. You draw and get a Jack of Diamonds, the shot hits your sails and rigging and slows the ship by one. This means your ship is no closer to sinking, but has taken damage to affect its movement. Now had you drawn a three of clubs, which is a complication, you would take two hull damage and would lower your ships crew...See more

Hi creators. I want to use Buccaneers in SWADE Adventure Edition. Do the current Buccaneer rules work with that, or should I wait for an update/diff version?

Hi Chris! There is a document that was created and is available on DrivethruRPG that offers suggestions for converting the book to SWADE. At this point, there is no plan on a second edition that brings the book into SWADE. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/288779

Thanks for the heads up! Not sure why that feature isn't working. I tried to fix it, but no luck. The quick preview still works and give a good idea of what the book will feel like.

I’m thinking about buying this to borrow ship creation and combat rules. How compatible are they with SWADE?

While we are working on a conversion document, it will take us sometime. That said, making the conversion shouldn't be that difficult if you are wanting to use Buccaneer in your game.

Does this include info and/or the option to play a naval character in the British Navy as well or only pirates?

Hi Jonathan!

I suppose you could play a naval character, but the focus of the book is on playing more of an independent character such as a buccaneer, voodoo practitioner and others. A better option might be a former naval character that has found that pay and equality are much better in the employ of a pirate captain. :-)

Given that our first printing has sold out, we're looking at doing a second printing and doing in to distribution. If this happens, we will of course update the material to SWADE. No current ETA, but expect a progress update this summer.

What Christopher said! :-)

What we will probably do for this book until a SWADE compliant book can be released would be a conversion document with suggestions on how to use Buccaneer with SWADE.

I'm not finding the ship combat rules very intuitive.
I think an example of a full-blown blow-by-blow encounter would've been very helpful.....perhaps one could be added to the publisher's website as a download might be possible?

This is mislabeled as PDF instead of Watermarked PDF. I would not have bought the book otherwise (especially at that price point). The artwork is very nice but the page backgrounds can be more than a little busy. With no option to disable certain layers the book is decidedly not print-friendly.

Those gripes aside I do overall like the book itself - specifically the rules for creating and handling unique ships and the rules for 'chaos environments'.

Hi Steve,

Our apologies for that! We should have been clearer. We initiated the watermark at the bottom of the page to try to protect from theft. So many .PDFs get shared on sites for anyone to download for free. However, if the watermark hinders your ability to enjoy this product than this is also a concern for us. We'll talk on this end and see what we can do. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!

I there any info you can provide about what makes this setting unique/distinguishable from PEG's Pirates of the Spanish Main, other than the obvious fact that yours is not a licensed setting?

There are new mechanics for ships and ship combat. There are nearly 2 dozen new edges and hindrances. There are some cool rules around losing a limb vs death and the dynamics of the world are really cool. The setting has different arcane backgrounds and really cool monsters. This all adds up to a setting vastly different than POTSM.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
