What you know...

Increasingly you feel you are not in your own body. Dreams have come that shake your belief in yourself. Your sleeping mind is full of incredible hints at higher realities, snatches of a heavenly existence, and the pain of a terrible fall from grace. Now this place where you live no longer feels like home. And the Dreams are getting stronger, and stranger…

 

What you have been told...

The thing that calls itself the Envoy has told you that something has awakened inside of you. And with that awakening comes a realisation that you were once something more than human; you were a god, a post-human, one of the Numina.

Your world was called Elysium – a paradise beyond this reality. Separated from the material realm, your kind found delight in watching and manipulating the lesser beings trapped in a material existence on the Flame Worlds, playthings created for your pleasure. You called it Dreaming, an endless source of entertainment and intrigue.

But times change. You committed a crime.

And for that you were thrown out, ejected, named an Exile. Now even in your awakened state Elysium seems little more than a vague memory.

Now that this truth has been revealed to you, it seems an obvious thing.

But there is hope. The Envoy offers a way to resolve the guilt of your crime. Increasingly you see that this is the only way you can return to Elysium. Under the Envoy’s guidance you invoke your one-time comrades, the Numina, and through them reveal more of your home and your past. Doing so risks psychosis, but the Envoy gives you the black pills to help with that.

This is where you are – the Flame Worlds, a place of death and intrigue, among billions of souls trapped in this mundane existence. You and your fellow Exiles must accept the Envoy’s offer, and meet others of your kind to do his bidding. What will you discover among the Flame Worlds? Who knows, but if it ends your exile, it is worth it.

Ooooh... I missed the Kickstarter (found the book because I looked if In Flames had an update).
p.86 "Flame is an old sun; its core has long since depleted the original supply of hydrogen. The fusion of protons into helium nuclei is now the dominate power source."
Protons are hydrogen atoms without an electron. Flame probably has regular hydrogen fusion around the helium core, or did you want to describe helium fusion into carbon?

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for getting the game and the comments. I must confess I'm a chemist, not a physicist, so it may be that I've not worded myself as well as I could there. Feel free of course to alter any of the world parameters as you see fit, I wrote In Flames many years back and Exilium contains the same core text with some additions, so I can't say exactly why I wrote what I did! I hope you enjoy the game anyway!

Hi there. A few minor changes really, and the feet/meters thing mentioned below. A slight change to how the Envoy's pills work - the Shadow only glows if it is actually performing the activity that made it into a Shadow (that will make sense if you've read the book!) - that's an extra line of text. Nothing to worry about, but if you fancy the final file, go for the new version.

The book looks interesting, and I look forward to reading through it in detail. I did, however, notice that the book does something that's sort of a pet peeve of mine. The rules mix imperial and metric measurements. Movement is in feet, but weapons' range is in meters, that sort of thing. It's easily fixed, I know, but it still rubs me the wrong way.

Hi, yep, I've just seen that! I've edited the file so that everything is in meters, and will be uploading the new file soon, so look out for it. Also POD options will be on there soon.

Got the updated file, but it doesn't look like anything has changed. Movement is still in feet, planet diameters are still in miles.

Hi there. Character movement on page 39 is now in meters. The diameter of the planets is in miles, you are correct. That's a UK thing I'm afraid, we talk about meters but still use miles for distances! I will make a change to that in the future, but not this time around as I've just committed the print files. I hope that's not too big a deal, and thanks for the comments!

Firstly, In flames as a game line consisted of three books – core rules, Uplifts (details of Uplifted alien races including character options) and Chimera (technologies, including augmentations for characters). In Flames was 185 pages and both supplements were 74 pages each, in 6 inch x 9 inch format. Exilium takes all this content and puts it into a single book. The page count is around 160 pages, the reduction being a result of a change in the dimensions of the book to US letter size (if you like, standard roleplaying game book size). This allows us to make the most of the colour art and layout. All the original content is included, and in fact there’s more in Exilium as I’ve added to and refined some of the rules and fluff. The three original books have also been integrated, so all the components flow and the book reads well. Getting this right has been a big part of the rewrite.

I hope that makes sense!

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
