PURCHASER

Hello there.
I just recently discovered Shadow, Sword & Spell, literally thanks to several books in a discount box at the shop of an old retailer friend. I got those in an impulse purchase just before the holidays, in December 2019. Granted, the books I picked up there were for the 1st edition, and the Basic book was missing, so I got that from another retailer altogether, a week or so later. It was only after that purchase that I discovered that there has been a Second Edition since 2017. This is probably only the second or third time I have got massively interested in a new game system and bought the material for an outdated edition. So, my biggest relief was the author stating that all the previous SS&S books are still compatible with the 2nd edition. I'm pretty sure I am going to get the new edition as well as a PDF and a book, and hope to not get confused. Just don't release a Third Edition book so soon, okay?

I'm not sure whether this is an erratum or not: in the example on p. 160, the text says, "Your Domain initially began as Wilderness, attracting 1d12 x 50 families as the first settlers. You rolled a d12, and got a 7, so 350 families settled. After a month, you check the population growth, and rolled 18 on 2d12, which gives you a 10% increase, or 30 new families." But the table next to that example says that a roll of 18 is a 20% increase in population. I'm guessing that "18" should be "16" (which would give a 10% increase). Or have I missed something?

Also, if you have 350 families, a 10% increase should be 35 new families, not 30.

It is. Here is the run down.
In any case here is what the changes are (besides merging the two books):

A few things you will notice upon reading this: things have changed. Like what?

Stats now go from 1 to 24

Stats now get an ability bonus based on their rank

The die mechanic is now roll high, but still d12 (that will never change)

How skills work are changed and make a hell of a lot more sense

Skill functions are now: Ability Bonus + Skill Rank + 2d12

Target Numbers are now set, and in order to succeed you must beat the TN. In addition, the TN is not adjusted, but the die roll.

Skills now include tables that provide examples of actions and the TN associated with them. This helps GMs and Players when thinking of their own actions.

No longer do you find Dramatic Failure and Success in the game. In truth I have never liked them.

Buying Skills and Spells make more sense.
