BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules are a table top fantasy roleplaying game which emulates the game play of the original basic rule book, popularly known as the Holmes Edition or simply the Blue Book. Unlike those basic rules, however, this book allows for characters of 1st to 20th levels, and include everything the referee could possibly need to create and run a campaign in the Underworld, the Wilderness, or the Realm: monsters, magic, treasure, and … well, what more do you need? BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules are fully compatible with the BLUEHOLME™ Prentice Rules, and can be used with most old-school adventure modules.

I don't quite understand the movement multipliers. For example a human fighter can move 30 feet in a combat round. The multiplier for exploring is 12. Does this mean the the fighter can move 360 feet when exploring? (30x12)

In the early D&D editions, movement/time is unique to that edition. This is different in between 0e, Holmes Basic, 1e, BX, and BECMI/RC. For the Holmes Edition, combat turns are 100 seconds, normal turns are 10 minutes, and combat rounds are 10s (1/10 of a combat turn). In BLUEHOLME Journeymanne, your human fighter in combat moves 30' unless armored and encumbered at which point they move 15' per round (10 seconds). Out of combat, they would move 360' or 180' armored and encumbered per turn (10 minutes) while exploring. (P46-47)

You're right, there are no Strength modifiers in Holmes or BLUEHOLME™, other than XP modifiers if it is a prime requisite.

Hey Michael, under combat movement it states a character can attack before, during, or after their movement. I'm confused on this as combat is done in phases with all attacks taking place prior to the movement phase. So are you saying you can choose not to attack during the normal phase and instead wait to attack during the movement phase instead?

Hi Charles. You have it right, normally everything happens in phases. However, a character can opt to delay their attack. In all cases, the idea with BLUEHOLME™ as with other old-school games is that you should treat the rules as guidelines - if you as a referee don't want to allow characters to "hold" their attacks, that's fine, too.

Thanks to John McEwan, and the fact that Dr J Eric Holmes said his highest-level character ever was a 4th-level Dreenoi! Of course, you can also play any other species you want. A word of warning, though, Gelatinous Cube PCs really slow the party down, and you really need to watch what you're looking at when you have a medusa in the party. ;-)

At the moment there is only the opposite, if you buy the Lulu POD you get the PDF free. There will be a flurry of activity at Dreamscape Design in about a year from now, including PDF+POD, once I have relocated to another part of the globe.

Also you might want to do some promotion mentioning that you've completed the level progression to level 20. I remember seeing a review on Youtube, and was very excited about all the detail and character out into the game, but this review claimed that a later release would contain the rules extending to level 20. Been chomping on the bit to hear about that actually. Very disappointed to see your products removed, from Lulu.

Yes, you can get printed books from Lulu, not sure why you can't find them - though Lulu's search engine has never been the greatest. You can find the link on the Dreamscape Design website product page: https://wordpress.com/page/dreamscapedesign.net/117

The Journeymanne Rules (up there on this page) go up to level 20.

Hi Scott, the Lulu shop is still there - you can follow the link on the Dreamscape Design website: https://dreamscapedesign.net/products/

On that note, it is likely that these books will also become available as PoD here on DTRPG over the course of the year.

Hello, Michael! I plan to buy this...because Holmes! But I have a meta question. Well two. Since the Holmes was essentially a compilation and rationalization of OD&D, and your Prentice rules are essentially the Holmes rules:

1) How does your Prentice edition differ from Holmes? Both presentationally and operationally?

2) How does the Journeymanne edition differ from OD&D?

Very very interested in this project! :)

Hi Gideon

1) Presentationally, the Prentice Rules follow Moldvay rather than Holmes. Operationally, the intent is to hew as closely as possible to the published Holmes rules.

2) Substantially. The Journeymanne Rules are an extrapolation of Holmes to level 20, not a direct clone of OD&D. Certainly, some of the higher-level spells and magic items are inspired by OD&D, but everything else is based on Holmes Basic itself, or Holmes's other writings. The creature chapter, for example, contains only entries mentioned somewhere by Holmes (and there are a lot!).

Happy to hear of your interest!

I'd also like to add that I'm a bit confused as to what the intention is in regards to races and classes. In the Prentice rules, under each race description it specifically states what classes and multiclass combos are available to each race.

In the Journeymanne Rules on page 4, '3. Choose a race for the character.' it specifically states, "This determines which classes are available...", but in this rules set the racial abilities are not explained in Part 2, but instead in chapter 6. When you go to the monster description of that race, there's no mention of class restrictions. I can find no chart, and under the classes itself its rather vague. Magic-user for example, it states, "Many races count magic-users amongst their number."

this is really confusing, because of the verbiage on page 4. If its the intention of the rules to leave what classes are available to the races to the referee, I understand that, but as it is, it has me looking for rules which don't seem...See more

Good point re: the wording on p.4 - I'll revise this to make it more explicit. The intention is that any class is available to any race, with the agreement of the referee.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
