Hello. Would you guys help me boost my current Kickstarter? I'm putting together a third volume of monsters for Black Hack. I have two other volumes here on DriveThru. it's been a few years since I published those and hope to get some additional exposure via the current crop of Black Hackers. Thanks! :^)

Dear Graham - do you anticipate ever making an expansion or setting/adventure book for this game? I (and others) enjoy it immensely and love for another sourcebook or adventure to come out.

Hello Christoper, thank you for your kind words about Heroic Fantasy. I'm substantially happy with it, but having said that I do have three pages of notes for some expansions to it. I'd be sticking mostly to TBH 1st as the base, adding some tweaks here and there. My writing has taken a bit of a nosedive this year and I have a new version of Wordplay (TRIPOD) to get out. Maybe something tail end of 2021?

Setting/adventure wise, what would you like to see?

I'm glad to hear you've got some ideas percolating for HF. It's still one of my favorite TBH hacks.

Regarding the aesthetics... If you update the original, it would be cool to see you use a heavier font. I'm partial to Dominican for fantasy-type settings.

As for rules... I have found that the TBH 2e monster rules work pretty well with TBH 1e. I've been planning to release a third volume of my Creature Feature Quarterly for Black Hack soon and so far (knock on wood) I've been able to straddle both editions. Have you checked out Black Sword Hack? There might be a few interesting tweaks in it you could incorporate as well. Also, it would be cool to see Horcs added as well... to me HF is nearly ADnD ala TBH... but no Horcs makes me sad. :^)

Cheers! Looking forward to what you cook up.

I really agree that this is like playing AD&D via TBH.

An expansion sounds great. Some GM tables and wilderness rules would be a nice addition.

I would love to see a Keep on the Borderlands type adventure for this system, but within your theme of the game (which seems to favor a more traditional Tolkien type setting). Even though characters are "heroic" in HF, they are still very squishy compared to modern systems like 5e, which I really like. KotBL is pretty basic but I would like to see what you do with it because you have a very traditional approach which is refreshing.

Another adventure I would like to see would be a very straight forward tale of a group of adventurers traveling to a far off dungeon to stop a dragon or wizard (via the wilderness, ships, and mountains). It's incredibly basic but nobody does it straight forward any more.

I would be very interested in any of these or any setting that you create. I like the implied theme in your game. Example, the way your game is setup, I could write a darkly...See more

The website is a bit slow and will be moved to alternative hosting. It's better than it was, so give it a go:

On page 32 (Tests) the "healing" action is listed below INT (in the Stats table). On page 45 (Healing) it says to use WIS to heal. Which of the 2 Stats is correct and which is not?

In my play it is INT, so p.32 is correct.

Hello there,

I just recently purchased this and so far I love it. I did have a question about Assassin poison:

1. How is the poison that the Assassin can make different from Blade Venom? If the Assassin poisons a monster does the monster roll a CON test to resist?

The way I play it, the ingested poison uses the Lethality Die, whereas the blade venom simply increases the damage die by one step. You could have the damage die increase by more than one step for higher level assassins or even use an extra lethality die for more damage. I have kept it simple but layer on extra if you want to accentuate the use of poisons.

Hey Christopher, I'm taking a look at TBH2. It's really well put together and full of great ideas. Mostly, I like where Heroic Fantasy is pitched at and don't think it needs an overhaul. Having said that it would be really nice to either provide an update to the book or put out an expansion volume. I'm working on Wordplay 2 right now, but plan to get back to Heroic Fantasy after then. How about a setting/adventure?

Graham, is this one final now? I was thinking I should finally get a printshop edition put together. But an update would be quite welcome. :^)

Hi Jeremy, it's fairly final :). I might revisit next year, though I'm fairly happy with the core game. I have some notion of a 'Companion' book that adds more races, classes, monsters, spells, mass combat etc. You never know!

Hi, not in this version. Next year I may bring out a second edition with a host of additional ideas for the game, whilst keeping the core untouched.

Very nice! Solid OSR interpretation of TBH, with good "learners" advice. I noticed a lovely little bit of influence from Apocalypse World, too. Never a bad thing.

Two teensy quibbles:

1. Your dice progression is incorrect -- if the numbers in parentheses are supposed to be dice averages. The single-die averages, rounded down, are correct. The double-die averages are not. For example, d6+d8 = 2 to 14 (average 8, not 7). Not a deal breaker, for sure.

2. Your OGL Section 15 is missing the Copyright notices required by Section 6. Those are needed for folks like me who might want to scoop up some of the cleverest open-content bits for their own products.

Definitely a cool utilization of TBH. I was wondering if you could include options for a Half-Orc PC race? Additionally, maybe some guidelines for creating unusual races in the DM's section would be helpful.

Cheers Jeremy! Yes, lots of endless permutations. They are hardy those Half Orcs, perhaps they get to roll their Hit Die with Advantage? ;-)

Several months ago I bought the Black Hack (tBH) rpg (among many many others) as I continued the search for my perfect RPG. At the time I made the mistake of dismissing it as an experiment that was not for me. The other day I had another look and saw how wrong my first impression was. tBH is a wonderful piece of work, simple, flexible, expandable, and suited for both one shots and full campaigns. So it was by coincidence Heroic Fantasy (HF) appeared on RPGNow just as I was analysing all things tBH. As no one had commented on HF I only had the description to go on and today decided to buy and see for myself. I just spent less than 30 minutes scanning the rules and my impressions are as follows:
Nice Cover (Front and back) art, interior art sparse and simple, dyson map used for included adventure;
Unlike tBH if you roll 15 or more you dont limit the next rolled stat, rather they are capped at 15! (personally I would be miffed if I rolled an 18);
Races have been added (Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, and...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
