Mazes & Perils Deluxe Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Mazes & Perils Role-playing Game (MnP) takes a page from the first wave of the Old School Renaissance (OSR) when it wasn’t OLD at all… Inspired by the 1977 “Holmes” edition of the world’s most popular role-playing game, it shuns pages and pages of rules for a simpler time when House rules were the order of the day.

First released in 2012, MnP drew a line on the map of OSR retroclones as something easy to pick up and play where your heroes weren’t superheroes. There are no superpowers here. Fighters have swords and armor. Clerics have their faith. Thieves skulk in the shadows seeking better items to steal. And Magic-Users sling magics at their foes until they run out of spells. This style of gaming is about grit and wit – and if you die, it must be time to roll up a new character.

The original book was awarded a Gold Ennie Award in 2013 for "Best Free RPG" and now we've updated it with even more great content!

Now in 2016, a new version of MnP – with some new classes, new spells, new optional rules, and a new look! Mazes & Perils Deluxe offers everything you liked about the original with a new coat of paint and a few new tools in the toolbox! New bits include:

  • New Class – The Enchanter – along with 20+ new spells in his arsenal
  • New Class – The Shaman – along with nearly 20 new spells of his own
  • Rules for Variable Damage for Weapons and Variable Hit Dice
  • New layout, more art, and plenty of editing

Come check out a blast from the past and see why OSR is alive and well!

Now available as a softcover version as well! Mazes & Perils Deluxe Edition will look great on your gaming shelf!

I grabbed the free option, checked it out, bought your 4 dollar pdf, I think the free one visually is almost a bit better looking.
The additional content is nice, but, it is not so much better I'd rate it higher.

Inasmuch as my opinion is concerned, it is an ok Old school item.
The first one is 61 pages and the deluxe is 75 pages.
It would be nice as hardcover. But I am unsure if it would be worth more than 15 bucks. The challenge being, can the publisher make it and make a profit to make it worth it to them.
I've got a 17 dollar item Basic Fantast Roleplay. Hardcover 265 pages and they managed it.

It comes down to, will you want it printed out, or left as digital. As digital, it will do fine on a tablet and for free, you can't complain. You can't really complain for digital and 4 bucks either. But I have a thing for hardcover and in print.

And so far, I've collected several items that are in the end, the same design. Same stats, same 4 races same...See more

Sadly I am not very familiar with how the print process works here, so when the files were updated, we lost the print copy. I don't have a working partner anymore that understands this stuff. So I humbly apologize, you could take the PDF and print it up via Lulu press.

Will that work with a 'watermarked PDF'?

Kind of dissapointed that you guys took down the free version, as I'm not willing to pay just to satisfy my curiosity. BTW, you still claim that it's available to download on your website: http://www.moebiusadventures.com/products/mazes-and-perils-series/mazes-and-perils/

After talking with Vince, the original publisher of Mazes & Perils, he decided to remove it recently. We may in the future look at adding it again, but it will be unavailable for the indefinite future. We are sorry if that dissuades you from picking up a copy of the newer edition. A good number of pages are available to view in the preview, so hopefully that will suffice in the short term.

Can you have a full size preview where there is some actual content ? Its a title page/errata. The quick preview is too small to see anything worth while. If i could see more about this game, I might buy it. Im a big Moldvay fan.

Thanks for pointing out the preview problem! I have fixed it for both the quick and full sized previews to point at the actual file and not the errata!

So, I checked the update and the G+ site, and I still don't see dwarf and halflings saving throw bonuses detailed anywhere.

You are correct and we apologize. That one slipped through the cracks. After talking with Vince today he mentioned that it should have been removed from the Deluxe edition as a mistake. It was something he wanted removed. I will be updating the PDF and the Errata soon to reflect this change. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Shouldn't the term for a shaman's overnight meditative state be "atunement", not "atonement". Nothing indicates they are trying to make up for misdeeds, but does indicate that they are trying to align their minds with the spirits around them. I think the wrong word was used.

Good question. Do you mind joining our G+ community (see one of the other comments for a link) so we can discuss it more easily? I'll add your question there to kick things off.

So, I notice both dwarves and halflings are listed as having better saving throws versus magic but I don't see that bonus listed anywhere.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
