Kingdom of Orbaal

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Orbaal, a fractious kingdom in Hârn's wild north, is a land of mountains and fjords. A land where the rebellious Jarin, beaten but not broken, chafe under the rule of Ivinian viking conquerors. Around 8,000 Ivinian conquerors hold almost all of the kingdom’s fortresses and rule over 65,000 Jarin. A major rebellion erupted less than 20 years ago and considerable tension still smolders between the two cultures, encouraged by an active but disorganized Jarin resistance.

Orbaal is an exciting kingdom for your Hârn campaign. The unstable political and cultural environment provides a variety of adventure opportunities for your PCs.

The Kingdom of Orbaal module is the perfect companion to other Columbia Games publications, including keeps, castles, and adventure sites.

This product includes two PDFs: the 62-page kingdom module and a 17×22 full-color map of the kingdom.

Great product, and I LOVE the fact that the cover downloaded along with the rest of the document. Looks so good in my book listing!

The most ridiculous prices in game publishing.

The beauty of these products is that they can never be exhausted. They are designed for sandbox play, and can be used over and over again. The price is a long term investment in something that can never be obsolete. You can play in the same Orbaal setting ten years down the line, and it'll always be the same setting. No metaplot to follow.

Sure, I get it. I purchased virtually every Harn product published between 1982 and 1992. I also know that these newer editions are a step up in quality. However, $0.80 USD per page for an ELECTRONIC product is beyond stupid pricing.

Hey, it's their company, not mine. But I wouldn't buy a new edition of something I already own at half this price.

The pricing does strike most people as ludicrous but I promise you the level of detail and attention to the same more than make up for the high price. If you're looking for an incredibly detailed and realistic world you won't find a better deal.

Again, I'm very well acquainted with Harn. I own almost everything published in Columbia's first twelve years, and I ran games in it for almost all of that time. I know the quality of the originals, and of the new work. It's very high.

However -- FIFTY DOLLARS FOR A SIXTY EIGHT PAGE ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT. That price wouldn't be worth it if the book was made of solid gold cocaine.

Its insane. The level of detail is good, but not sufficient to justify the price.

For just 62 pages it's just too expensive.

Some aficionados of Harn would consider it an investment, more or less like an investment in a bunch of minis and all the paints and kit. Ten years from now, the Orbaal setting will be the same if you picked up the module configured for the ebook readers of 2028. The modules are designed to be enduring and a source of inexhaustible adventures and story hooks. You can never run out of stories set in the various Kingdoms and Republics of Harn, which is why it is considered to be a long term investment.

All PDFs will be the same in ten years time. It doesn't make them good value. For this money I could buy a hardback book with 4 times the page count and still have enough left for a couple of beers.

The setting is detailed but it's kind of dry and a bit stale for my liking.

It's a serviceable book for some background but I'm afraid the pricing would make Dick Turpin blush!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
