Fantastic Heroes & Witchery

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fantastic Heroes & Witchery is an OSR game that proposes a lot of options: more classes (more than 30), more races (traditional and others), more spells (666 exactly); in fact more of everything*. Yet, if you are already familiar with any other retro-clone or simulacrum of the OSR movement, you already know the rules: nothing to re-learn. Fantastic Heroes & Witchery proposes 430 pages of rules to play either in the vanilla fantasy, dark fantasy, or swords & planets genres, with its rules on corrupting sorcery, technological equipment, and much more. The PDF is fully bookmarked, providing a complete index and table of contents with hyperlinks, that will make navigation within its pages very easy.

(* Note however, that Fantastic Heroes & Witchery doesn't provide monsters and magical items. These will come in future supplements. Nonetheless, as FH&W is compatible with most games of the OSR movement, you can use creatures and magic items coming from such sources without need for conversions.)

Could someone at DOM reply with a link to a version that is not security protected? I want to split the text into two sections, not spells and spells, for home printing.

I emailed the author and he confirmed that he has abandoned this product and has no intent to revisit it. Here is the exact quote from his email: "I don't plan to do or write anything further, rpg-wise. Sorry. I abandoned the whole subject a couple of years ago."

It's still a great system.

This guy did a great job of blending old school and ascending AC/attacks. It would be a great starting point to make your own system modifications. I have used this with the old Mongoose Conan rules to simplify 3.5e rules and take out magic. I added some Castles and Crusades class development and critical hits/misses from Hackmaster for house rules. I think it is well worth the money but no updates in years.

I would love to see the author continue working on this excellent game. Has he said anything about the status of the game and its promised supplements?

I might take this one to my friendly neighborhood printshop soon. I'm guessing it's a Letter-sized page?

I have a question. I found out about Lion & Dragon, Dark Albion, and Fantastic Heroes & Witchery from RPG Pundit's YouTube page. I've been toying with the idea of getting one for some time and decided to snag Lion & Dragon today. I was happy that I finally did! I'm reading through it and this is the book I've been waiting for, for a long time. So I decided to pick up some others. I have Dark Albion (the setting apparently) and it's companions -Cults and the adventure available, but I'm wondering what exactly is Fantastic Heroes & Witchery? Is it a companion book to Dark Albion? Or is it a set of rules for Lion & Dragon? The write up, and forgive my confusion, makes it seem like a stand alone or a companion piece to something else? I'd hate to miss out on it so I'm asking if I should snag it with the others? Thank you.

Hey man, as a huge fan of all the books you mentioned, I can answer that. But I'm not related to the publisher or anything, I'm just a fan who has been following the work for years, ok?

L&D and Dark Albion were written by Pundit, they use his own rules set. The publisher of Dark Albion is DOM, which also publishes Fantastic Heroes and Witchery. As you know, L&D is the rules book, Dark Albion is the setting book. Combined they form a full game and you don't need anything else (but the supplements are great, as you know).

FH&W is NOT part of that group of books. This is a HUGE and complete OSR game, with MANY races and classes, with the traditional fantasy races/classes (you know, elves, dwarves...) and also including races/classes for "weird fantasy", "horror fantasy" and "science fantasy" (think Flash Gordon or John Carter and Cthulhu stuff). The book has comprehensive rules for equipment, great rules for combat (classic OSR, with a few ideas...See more

Is this game getting any further attention from the author? Seems its dead in the water.

Are the other books like: Blasphemous Bestiary still being worked on? Official website hasn't had any updates or anything in some time.

Greetings. I have got both the pdf and the original paperback (2.0 edition). Is there any reason i should get 2.1 hardcover? Are the changes substantial?

On the character sheet, what are the Random number, Maximum number, Sever %, and Facile % columns for next to the ability scores?

This work is just plain awesome. I use it for inspiration and reference. It provides me with everything I always wanted to include in my gaming, but was not creative enough to design myself. For example, I use the XP chart, the suggested rules for preparing lower level spells in place of higher level spells as well as let them wait to prepare some spells later int he day. I use the suggestions for incantations, Friars, etc. It is a beautiful book and a great resource. I highly recommend it. :)

On page 52 of the PDF (I think its the version 2, updated PDF), the Necronimus' Spirit Magic power formula reads: 1d20 + necronimus’ level vs DC = 10 + 2/spell’s level. Is this supposed to be 2 x spells level?

Hopefully this is an appropriate place to ask this, I couldn't find any other place to do so.

Not the author, but... yes it is 2 per (i.e. "/") spell level (i.e. 2 x spell level)

I appreciate your explanation. Your book is a great OSR toolbox; the classes are more like I would design and want to play than the original game. ...looking forward to the scifi book.

Hi there. I recently purchased the hardcover. Does this entitle me to a copy of the PDF? Thanks.

Well, sorry, but no. I tried to set a reasonable price (especially when you consider that it is a 430 pages book, in small font and fully illustrated) for both the PDF found here, and the printed book (available on Lulu or Amazon). Many huge rulebooks in PDF are sold at 15 to 20 $. I think that 7.50 $ is more than reasonable; and likewise for the softcover at 25.50 $ (with discount) on Amazon. Hence, I won't make bundle of print + pdf, especially as they are sold by different channels.

Now it's true that I gave a few complimentary copies to people who had bought the first edition, and had previously told about the game in forums. I wanted to apologize for the many typos and errors found in the first edition (that are now corrected in the present, 2.1 edition), so gave them a free PDF; and I wanted to thank those who made the game known on forums (who incidentally were often those who had bought the version 1).

But now, the PDF and printed books are not sold in bundles.

Are the pictures in the paid pdf clear? The ones without the index, while you can see them, are blurred.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
